TCAR Featured Pet of the week

Picture
Buddy
Tri-County Animal Rescue has Buddy as our featured pet this week.  Buddy is a 3 year old Bichon Frise.  He was surrendered to Tri-County Rescue after his previous owner discovered Buddy did not like men.  Buddy loves women but dislikes all adult males.  He weighs about 12 pounds and is extremely smart.  Buddy is very agile and walks around on his hind legs…he is good at standing up and begging for food. Buddy is neutered, current on rabies vaccine, current on distemper/parvo vaccines, de-wormed and he has been micro-chipped.   Please come see the Buddyat the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard on Friday from 6-9pm, Saturday from noon to 6pm, and Sunday from 2 to 5pm.

Tri-County Animal Rescue will also have other pets for adoption at PetSmart this weekend.

UPDATE: Taz was adopted last weekend.

Girl holds special Birthday party to benefit Tri-County Animal Rescue

Picture
Alayna Pettit loves animals most especially dogs and plans to become a veterinarian when she grows up. For now though, Alayna is making a difference in the lives of animals in her own way.

For her 9th birthday, Alayna chose to have a “dog” themed birthday party. She had 32 friends join her in hand painting dog food bowls and all enjoyed Paw print cake and cupcakes. Instead of gifts for herself, Alayna asked that all her friends bring dog food, supplies or monetary donations for Tri-County Animal Rescue.

Tri-County Rescue is a non for profit no kill organization that works solely from donations and volunteers.

“Tri County Animal Rescue would like to thank this special 9 year old girl,” said Joann Hager, founder of the organization. Because of her love of animals and thoughtfulness and the kindness and giving of her family and friends, Tri County Animal Rescue received many gifts of food, treats, toys and money to help support and care for our loving pets while they wait for their ‘forever families’ Thank you Alayna !”

Alayna lives in Kings Mountian with her family

Scooter Needs Surgery....Donations needed

Picture
Scooter
Scooter is a handsome toy poodle born July 2012 without the use of his back legs. Scooter was the last of five puppies born in the litter. Unfortunately, there was not enough room in the momma's womb for his legs to develop correctly. So when Scooter was born, he was not able to walk. But don't tell Scooter there is anything wrong with him, he gets along fine. He got his name cause he scooted every where in the beginning. Now he runs and walks on his front legs. Who needs back legs when the front ones work great.

When Scooter turns 6 months old in January, the Veterinarians will determine if his back legs need to be amputated at the knees or at the hips. The Vet will also determine at that time if Scooter needs Perineal Urethrostomy surgery.

April 9th UPDATE: Scooter had surgery today and he is doing great!
May 6th UPDATE: Scooter has to have another corrective surgery tomorrow.

Once Scooter has these surgeries, he will be ready to find his furever home. Tri County Animal Rescue needs your help with donations to pay for these surgeries. Please donate with PayPal below or come by PetSmart to visit Scooter in person. Thank you all for your continuous support!

Man missing ear bonds with dog missing ear

Some people searching for a pet might come across a dog with one ear and notice an imperfection.

Tim Loftin of Mount Holly only saw someone else he could identify with.

“I liked it,” he said of the feature on his newly adopted pooch. “We just kind of bonded right off.”

Loftin, 59, suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body due to an explosion at Duke Energy’s Allen Steam Station in February 1979. Two of his co-workers died.

Loftin lost his left ear as a result of the injuries. Plastic surgeons later used cartilage from his ribcage to try to repair it as much as possible.

Memories of the tragedy resurface every year about this time for Loftin, who still works at the steam plant as a records technician. For the last decade, he battled through the depression each time with help from his Australian cattle dog, or “blue heeler,” named Steve.

Steve was 10 years old when he contracted heartworms and became too sick. Loftin was forced to make the humane choice, though it was one he dreaded.

On the way to have Steve put down in September, he stopped and bought his best friend a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. After Steve gobbled it up, Loftin held him, cried and apologized for what he had to do.

“I don’t know if he was the best dog in the world, but I sure liked him a lot,” he said.

Terry Loftin said it was hard to see her husband of 41 years so down. When he finally suggested finding a new pet in February, they went to PetSmart in Gastonia one afternoon. Tri–County Animal Rescue of Lincoln County was showcasing a number of dogs that were up for adoption.

The pens inside were filled with several dogs, young and old. But Terry Loftin said her husband’s eyes immediately shot to a sprightly puppy that was missing a left ear.

“He just kept holding him and looking at him and loving on him,” she said. “He told our daughter, ‘This is a sign. This dog doesn’t have a left ear and neither do I.”

They call him Leon. The mixed-breed dog, who has a reddish tint and may have some Jack Russell or Labrador in him, is now 16 weeks old. And he’s adjusting well to his new home.

Loftin said Leon eases his pain.

“He’s helping me mend a broken heart,” he said. “He’s a lot of fun and lot of comfort. He’s going to be a good friend.”

We are a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization and are 100% volunteer run. Because of this, we rely heavily on of the kindness and generosity of animal lovers near and far to help us do this work. All proceeds go directly to the animals' care. Because vet bills for so many animals can run very high, financial gifts are the lifeblood of our program. We'll happily give you a donation receipt for your contribution.
