  • Take Freedom Drive (which is actually NC HWY 27) and head west.

  • Crosses I-85 and becomes two lane road

  • Go through Paw Creek (Tank Town)

  • At the light, turn left and Hwy 27 will merge with Mt. Holly/Huntersville Road

  • Cross Catawba River, keep going straight through Mt. Holly

  • Go through Stanley. Stanley has three traffic lights. First one has Burger King on right. Last (third) light is out from town and there is an abandoned used car lot on the right. Stay straight on 27.

  • 2 1/2 miles from this light you will come to another traffic light at a cross road. Before the intersection you pass a Volunteer Fire Dept on left. There are several other junkie looking buildings on both sides of 27. On the right hand is a post office and a Phillips 66 country store called 'Country Corner" ' This is Alexis. Stay on 27 through this light. 6/10ths of a mile past this light you will see the county line sign on the left hand side of 27 that says: LEAVING GASTON CO./ENTERING LINCOLN CO. Just past this sign there will be two paved drives on the opposite (right) side of 27 from the county sign. The second is 'Al Hager' lane and there is a big sign for TRI-COUNTY ANIMAL RESCUE. Turn right off 27 on to Al Hager. We are the big gray building on right behind and above small gray house.

  • Take I-85 south to NC HWY 16 exit. (not sure of exit number but think it says NEWTON). Exit on to 16 and go north (right) on 16.

  • Four lane road all the way. Stay on 16 until you cross the Catawba River (Mtn. Island Lake - big bridge). Turn left at first traffic light after crossing bridge. Riverbend Steam Station is on right.

  • You go up a hill and there's a sharp right hand curve. (Not sure what they actually call this stretch of road but it is the old two-lane hwy 16.) You cross the railroad track that goes to Riverbend. Just past the railroad there are two roads that intersect this road on the left. The first is NC HWY 273 to Mt. Holly. The second one is Cox Lake road. They are so close together that the yellow 'diamond' intersecion sign has both of them on the same sign. Turn left on to Cox Lake road.

  • You stay on Cox lake until you come to a stop-sign. Turn left at this stop-sign on to Stanley-Lucia rd. You only got about 1/2 mile on this road until you turn right on to Alexis-Lucia road. (This is the first road on the right.)

  • You will cross two bridges on this road and go several miles until you come to another stop sign. Turn right and then immediately turn left. It is almost a cross road but they missed by a few feet. This will still be Alexis-Lucia road.

  • You will come to a traffic light. This is Alexis and NC HWY 27. Turn right at the light on to 27. 6/10ths of a mile from there you will see the county line sign on the left hand side of 27 that says LEAVING GASTON CO./ENTERING LINCOLN CO.

  • Just past this sign on the other side (right) are two paved driveways. The second is Al Hager lane. There is a big sign that says TRI COUNTY ANIMAL RESCUE. Turn right off of 27 on to Al Hager. We are the large gray building on the right above and behind the small gray house.
